A bass part in which the notes have numbers under them to indicate the chords to be played.
In 18th-century music, notation of a leading harpsichord or organ part indicating the bass line in standard notation, and the remaining music by numeric chord indications, allowing the player to fill in as necessary.
It arose because the keyboard player often doubled as conductor, and is still practiced by session musicians.
